Looks like the updates are now annual. I had a good year. Went to Hawaii with
my mom. Met an incredible girl and spent and unforgetable summer with her.
Went to Japan for two weeks. Still taking classes. Started racing on a J24
boat as a jib trimmer. Slowly getting the hang of things. Started rock
climbing. Work is going well. Alex is interning at Google, so got to spend a
lot of time with him this summer.

So, it's been almost a year since my last update. Things are generally good.
Work is going great, just saw Coldplay at Shoreline. Been doing lots of
sailing and windsurfing, but the stanford dinghy rental is closed for a couple
of months. Listenning to Libbie Schrader to get her out of my head. Burning
man is next week, and I am completely unprepared. And after that, yep, school
again. I am not so excited about it this time around, since I really want to
focus on work.

So a lot has happened in the last three months. I bought a condo, got two
kitties (Oreo and Kit), got a roomate Huy, became a techlead of project
Platypus at Google, and met a crazy girl with multiple personalities named
Cybil. I also did a super-fun treasure hunt (Shinteki), BANG 7 (which we won)
and will soon be doing Justice Unlimited. Our team is called Kittens Kittens
Kittens, and we are gonna get our asses handed to us. Due to security issues
LECS is no longer willing to host my website, but thanks to Omar and other
netapt admins, my website has a new home. http://daveey.netapt.com/ That's all
for now.

Lot's of new stuff. Got into Stanford. Yay! Bought a motorcycle. Double yay! Work is awesome, working on a couple of really neat projects. Thinking of investing in a house/condo. Yes, it is tax season, why do you ask? Wondering why so many people are complaining about GMail. Big deal, a computer scans your message and offers you ads. Privacy for privacy's sake just seems silly. Well, that's about all, so not that much new stuff I guess.

I am exhausted. Just got back from CodeCon [notes] [pics], and before that, a nano-tech symposium at the Exploratorium. Saw some really neat stuff! This one guy built little skeletons out of silicone, and then got muscle cells to bind to it, and made it move. And some other guy got an inkjet printer to print arteries. And there was some stupid artist guy who didn't know shit but wanted to "inspire cultural dialogue". And CodeCon was awesome too. Met a bunch of famous people, like the craigslist folks, and the hotornot guys, and some PGP and EFF guys. I like the Bay Area. I also had to dodge questions from search engine spammers who kept asking me about Google's algorithms. I was kinda tempted to make stuff up, but laziness pervailed and I just walked away. Work is crazy, too much stuff to do. So tired of school, how do I convince my self to keep taking classes?

Well, I am older again. Busy as ever. Work is still fun, school is still hard, homework still needs to be done.

I've been on vacation! Well, that just means I had a break from school. Work is still there, but it feels like vacation 'cuz there is less of a load. Got an A in my class, which is good. Been reading a lot, which is also good. But mostly because none of my friends are around to do anything else with, which is bad. Went to the park to play tennis yesterday, and met some 62 year old from Uruguay who kicked my ass. And now I am all sore. In my defense, he is a retired tennis coach, and I suck. Just woke up, which is kinda sad, 'cuz now I wont fall asleap again, and I have work tomorow. Oh well, time to code.

Had a busy month. School is tough, but I am getting the hang of it. Can't say the same for personal life, but it's slowly comming along. Feeling a bit unhappy, but don't have any good reasons, just plenty of bad ones.

Gosh, I really need to stop staying at work till 5am. Went to visit Mei in Denver last weekend. Their biggest problem is that they have too much land. They add extra right turn lanes, just because they can. Also, they don't have any people. Working, a lot. Going to school and feeling dumb.

Went to see Terry Pratchett sign books last night! So much fun! He da man. And got to meet Grace! And today I am sick. Stupid universe trying to preserve equilibrium or something. So much stuff to do, too! Taking AI class at Stanford, which is great fun. And Google is going good, 'sept I am swamped. And one of these days I will even clean my room. I promise.

Haven't written here for a while. Just got back from a 2 month trip in Europe. So much fun. And started work at Google. Also fun. Looking for a cheap place to stay in the Bay Area, a car, and a circle of friends. More to come later.

Just got home after a rather scary motorcycle accident. Guy turned left in front of me, as I was running a yellow. I think I spent most of my karma points on staying a live. But the bike ain't doing too good. Maybe the insurance will pay for it, but it's his word against mine on if I was running a yellow or a red.

So just had a great weekend in Seattle, thanks to Microsoft. Made me really want to work there. Then went to Palo Alto, and interviewed with Google. Made me really want to work there. Now I don't know what to do. Just waiting for offers. Plan is to get a huge offer, and then go to Europe for the summer. Let's see if I manage to do it this time.

All my friends are gone. Even the one's that live in LA. I bet New York is pretty now. Pretty cold that is. I slept for 16 hours straight! Felt so good. Now I am bored. Working, granted, but still bored. Speaking of working, gonna start looking for work sometime soon. If you want to hire me, let me know! I am cheap. (Compared to a fighter jet. (An expensive fighter jet)).

Wow, I don't update this thing very often, do I? But then again, how would you know? You don't read it often either! It's all your fault. So, what have I been doing lately? Well, mostly working. Hanging out with my old high school friend Alex. Saw Two Towers. It was good. Lots of fighting at max zoom, where you cant see anything other than blood and metal. Lots of huge armys killing other armies for what I am sure are very good reasons. Golem was cool! What else? Was skiing at Mamoth. Good fun. Nothing like tying your feet to boards and going down a steep tree covered mountain. The aliens are laughing at us.

Got back from Paris yesterday, and just woke up from a nice jetlag nap. I should get those more often, feels so good. Nice to see that europe hasn't changed much since I've been there last. Still old and catholic. Lots of pretty pictures though. Got to meet my german penpal, Anna! She's so cute. And got to go to the Rodin museum, and Orsay, and Louver, and see tons of old buildings and statues of dead kings and people who made the kings dead. And took about 500 photos which will be posted soon. Now I need to pack and drive a giant Uhaul down to LA with all this furniture. Fun. Fin.

I keep making the same mistake over and over again. When ever the quarter is about to end, I begin expecting to have some free time. The problem is that I then make plans for that free time, and no longer have any. So my spring break is even busier than my quarter. And the worst part is that I was actually expecting a break. But I got an A in my CS class. Go me! Now let's all hope I don't have to retake EE2.

Would you like to search me? The airport security did. Five fucking times. My laptop had some trace of chemicals on it. Or so said the big armed man in camo. But when they tested it again, there was nothing on it. I must be very subtle. But they caught on, and took my license and went to make sure I wasn't an escaped convict. Actually, I don't know what they did with my license. Just that it took an hour. Oh, and then they checked my shoes. Three times! Well, I hope everyone feels very safe.

From my dental hygenist:
"But they are hurting them selves in the long run. I mean, their economy is so dependent on tourism, who is going to go there if they keep bombing buildings?"
"They?"
"The Egytians"

I just had this great idea. So the problem is we don't know who organized this attack, and even if we find out it was bin-Laden, we don't really have a very good way of getting to him.
We get attacked for our capitalism, let capitalism fight back. Free market is the reason we are envied, let the free market be our salvation. We are producers, inventors, builders. We are not hunters. It just isn't something we can, or really want to do. So why bother? If you wan't something done and can't do it your self, hire someone who can.
Instead of fighting a war we cannot win, against inocent civilians we should not hurt, take the monney and put up a reward. For few billion dollars bin-Laden, or anyone else who is suspected of these crimes will be handed over to the US, quickly and efficiently.
He is considered a hero in his country, but you only need to convince one person, not the whole country. Hell, I bet the Taliban government would turn him over in secret, and just blame it on someone else. Then we can have a nice trial.
And if the US has a long standing policy for mail-ordering suspected terrorists, it will make it very difficult for a network of any kind to form.
|
|
9/13/01 4:33pm
|
|
Hahahaha, this is great. So the whole country gets pissed off at the terrorists destroying the World Trade Center, calling it an attack on free trade. And then they begin prosecuting gas stations for raising prices with the spiking demand.
I guess we didn't really need to have the towers destroyed to loose our values.
|
|
9/11/01 6:55pm
|
|
Why the World Trade Center?
It was a monument to men - men who loved life. Men, who with the brilliance of mind, the nobility of spirit, and sweat of their labor, chose to bring humanity out of darkness.
Men who said "Come, let us build a city, and a tower with its top in the sky." Men who had no use for monuments, who wished only to create, to prosper, to flourish.
It wasn't made out of marble, but out of living, thinking, working human beings. It was the true symbol of America, built by the people, for them selves.
And those who, out of misplaced contempt or bitter envy, would see it destroyed, have no place in humanity. They are the missing link.
They will try to take, what they have no hope of creating. And if they cannot, they will try to destroy it. Their actions confound the sane and anger all who love humanity.
We must defend our selves, but not with violence. We are builders, not destroyers. We have intelect, not hatred. We share a language that this time they cannot take from us.

Painter sucks.
So I spent about 8 hours (it's 7am, and I didn't just wake up) working on a picture. And, being the good computer user that I am, I made sure to save every 10 minutes or so. And then, guess what Painter did. It crashed. No big deal, right? I've been saving all along. Who cares. Well, Painter did. It crashed while I was saving, overwriting my 12MB file with 640K of, what it later refered to as, useless gorbage. Maybe it thought I was saving too much. More likely, it was just written by someone who has no idea what memory management is. So now all I have left is a 64x64 pixel preview icon. Yay me!

Instead of using ants for my algorithm, I think I'll use dogs. At least they remember how to get home.

Maybe instead of a "bus stop" they should call it a "bus may stop, but only if someone jumps in front of it, madly waving, and the driver is paying attention."

After five years of procrastination and a few days of work, my site is up. Now to find some sponsors, put up some banners, and go public in two years! The only thing missing is one of those Aeron chairs!

Sometimes I wonder if staying up all night to get some virtual ants to configure some network somehow is really a worthwhile pursuit. Then again, by the time I start thinking about things like that, it's usually too late.
